bringing local black history to PRIMARY SCHOOLs

Charcoal sketch of two young boys looking contemplative.

The Sankofa London Schools Project is looking to form new collaborations with primary schools across London seeking an engaging, creative and curriculum-relevant way to teach Black British history from a local perspective.

Why choose the Sankofa london schools project for your school?

Children are most inspired by stories they can relate to. The SLSP team brings to life the true stories of people of African descent who have lived and worked in London over three centuries.

These stories show students that Black communities have been part of London’s history for a very long time — not only surviving, but shaping society across all walks of life. Students gain a balanced, inclusive understanding of the past, and respond to these stories creatively - encouraged and supported throughout the process by multi-talented professional artists

What does the project look like in practice?

The project consists of 3 classroom-based workshops that are discussion-led, interactive and carefully scaffolded for Key Stage 1 & 2 learners, using an approach that ensures learning is memorable, inclusive and accessible to all abilities.

Workshop 1: Students learn about local historical individuals through interactive resources designed for primary-age learners

Workshop 2: Students respond to these stories through poetry, collage, animation, painting, drawing, masks, maps and sculpture

Workshop 3: Students work together to produce a final classroom artwork, ideal for display and celebration

Whose Stories?

A sample of the individuals and families whose stories we would like to share:

The Wests & The Griggs - Black British Families in London

Tobias Eccho & Family - Black British Gardeners

James Cumberlidge - The Royal Trumpeter

John Perkins -   The Royal Navy Captain

Jean-Baptiste Gilbert - The Stylist to the Stars

Ellen and William Craft - The Escape Artists

Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield - The Singer

How Much Does it Cost?

We are a non-profit organisation so the project fee of £450 covers the cost of the three workshops; a professional artist and 2 year access to an interactive digital workbook (Please note that an additional charge will apply for any art materials required).
